Music & Movements: Funk to the Folks
Saturday, March 3 @ 3:00-6:00PM
Hear a presentation, listen to music, engage in discussion.
“Funk to the Folks” will explore the sociopolitical significance of funk music and its offshoots, exploring the impact of musicians such as James Brown, Gil Scott-Heron, & Parliament-Funkadelic. Chris’ presentation will discuss the music’s connections to black power, afro-futurism and themes of liberation, and its long-term influence from the furious afrobeat of Fela Kuti, to the brash, rebellious sounds of hip-hop by artists such as Public Enemy.
Chris Bengtson is a local DJ and music aficionado, with a special passion for funk, jazz, hip-hop, & afro-latin music. He has curated over 80 mix shows online, sent remixes & edits to DJs worldwide, and broadcasts bi-monthly on a French online radio station.
