Folk: The Music of the People and Their Cause

Saturday, April 21st, 4-6pm

In America we are experiencing a surge of activism. The Women’s March, Black Lives Matter, and most recently March for Our Lives are making national news. Now the songs of protest are of the R&B, and rap variety, like J. Cole’s “Be Free,” and Lauryn Hill’s “Black Rage.” You can even hear a vague line of protest in the punk group Green Day’s album American Idiot. But protest music did not originate here, it originated in folk. From hymns during the Civil Rights era, the songs from the Wobblies Little Red Songbook, to the songs of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan, folk music has been the music of protest. Join us at the East Side Freedom Library, as we look at the people’s music on April 21st at 4 PM. We will have a presentation on the Folk Genre, as well as a performance by folk artist Luke LeBlanc.
