SUMMARY:Third Thursdays for Housing Justice - "The Pruitt-Igoe Myth"
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 17\, 2026 | 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM | East Side Freedom Library \n\n\nAs part of our “Reel Stories: Housing Justice in Film” series with Trilingua Cinema\, we will be holding a screening and discussion of The Pruitt-Igoe Myth\, a documentary examining the rise and fall of the Pruitt-Igoe public housing complex in St. Louis and the larger forces that shaped its story. \n\n\nOnce celebrated as a model for modern public housing\, Pruitt-Igoe was demolished less than twenty years after it opened and became a national symbol of so-called “failed” public housing. But the film asks us to look beyond the buildings themselves and toward the racism\, segregation\, disinvestment\, and public policy decisions that shaped the lives of the people who lived there. Join us for a discussion afterward about what Pruitt-Igoe can teach us about housing justice\, displacement\, and the ways communities are often blamed for systems that failed them. \n\n\nThe term\, “Public Housing\,” conjures many different images for people. Many people associate public housing with rundown properties that are cold and uninviting. This was the reputation the Pruitt-Igoe property is St Louis. However\, when examined more closely the story is far more complicated. Join us and public housing residents from the Twin Cities to talk about what public housing really means and how we can change the narrative for the better. \nWe’d love to know you’re coming: register here if you’re comfortable doing so.\nIt’s never required\, and walk-ins are always welcome. \n\nThird Thursdays with the Housing Justice Program\nWhat is the Housing Justice Program?\nThe Housing Justice Program grew out of East Side Housing Justice\, a coalition that began in 2019 that drove discussion around housing issues. We are continuing that work by coalition building and creating events that help us rethink common narratives around housing \nWhat are Third Thursdays?\nAs part of our Housing Justice Program\, we are holding events on Third Thursdays to talk about housing in a variety of ways\, like documentary screenings and talks with local activists! We hope to spark invigorating discussion and build quality connections amongst our community. \nWhy you should come!\nCome through to learn and meet others who care about housing! We want people to carry lessons from these events beyond our four walls and make connections. Registration is never required\, and walk-ins are always welcome. \n  \nBook Description\nIn the depths of the Depression\, with hungry\, desperate man begging for jobs\, a Teamsters Local with 175 members decided to take on the Minneapolis business community’s rabid anti-union Association. \nGrowing rapidly to a militant force of committed workers 5\,000 strong\, they battled the cops\, the hired thugs and the union-busting politicians. Some battles were bloody\, all of them were fraught with danger. \nNever backing down\, IBT Local 574 eventually broke the grip of the business community\, making Minneapolis a union town and inspiring union organizing across the Midwest. \nAuthor John Hanson recalls the stories his father told him about those heroic men and women and the fight to establish a democratic union. His is a poignant\, personal story that speaks a universal language of courage and justice. \n  \nAbout the Author\nJohn’s interest in unions and labor history began at home. His dad was a union organizer and strike committee member in the famous 1934 Teamsters strike in Minneapolis. His father was a great storyteller with a sharp memory for dates and events. After studying\nat the University of Minnesota and William Mitchell College of Law\, John built a career across many roles—union and nonunion\, government\, mediation\, and quality improvement work\, all the while immersing himself in the rich history of the Minneapolis immigrant experience and the labor movement. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join the East Side Freedom Library and the City of Saint Paul’s Office of Financial Empowerment for an informative session about tenant rights and protections in Saint Paul. \n\n\nThis session will cover: \n\nLimits on security deposits and prepaid rent\nApplicant screening and Uniform Screening Criteria\nThe temporary 60-day pre-eviction notice\, in effect through December 31\, 2026\nProtections for tenants when affordable housing properties are sold\n\nThe program will include time for questions\, open discussion\, and conversation about how these protections apply in practice. Light refreshments will be provided. \nTenants are especially encouraged to attend\, as well as housing advocates\, service providers\, and community members  who want to learn more about renters’ rights in Saint Paul. \n\n\n
