SUMMARY:Third Thursdays for Housing Justice - Fundraising Talk with Sarah Carthen Watson for Give to the Max Day
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 19\, 2026 | 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM | East Side Freedom Library \n\nFundraising Talk with Sarah Carthen Watson for Give to the Max Day\n\nA talk with the amazing Sarah Carthen Watson\, a seasoned civil rights litigator who specializes in fair housing law and policy advocacy. Learn about how our work impacts the community. \nSarah Carthen Watson is a fierce civil rights litigator who grew up in the Twin Cities\, worked around the country\, and now has landed back here and is representing multiple tenant unions as they fight for better living conditions. Her talk will remind you why housing is so important and why funding people who are fighting for a better world leads to better results. Join us to learn more about ESFL’s fight for housing justice and how you can support this important work. \nWe’d love to know you’re coming: register here if you’re comfortable doing so.\nIt’s never required\, and walk-ins are always welcome. \n\nThird Thursdays with the Housing Justice Program\nWhat is the Housing Justice Program?\nThe Housing Justice Program grew out of East Side Housing Justice\, a coalition that began in 2019 that drove discussion around housing issues. We are continuing that work by coalition building and creating events that help us rethink common narratives around housing \nWhat are Third Thursdays?\nAs part of our Housing Justice Program\, we are holding events on Third Thursdays to talk about housing in a variety of ways\, like documentary screenings and talks with local activists! We hope to spark invigorating discussion and build quality connections amongst our community. \nWhy you should come!\nCome through to learn and meet others who care about housing! We want people to carry lessons from these events beyond our four walls and make connections. Here at ESFL\, we believe solidarity is the way forward\, so come through\, make friends\, and start building power for change! \nWe’d love to know you’re coming: register here if you’re comfortable doing so. It’s never required\, and walk-ins are always welcome. \nWant to learn more? Reach out to the Housing Justice team!\nlucid@eastsidefreedomlibrary.org\ndakota@eastsidefreedomlibrary.org \n  \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Imagination Starts at Home: Housing Summit
DESCRIPTION:East Side Freedom Library Housing Summit\nNovember 20-21\, 2026\nHome looks different for everyone. It can be an apartment\, a yurt\, a manufactured home\, a shared house\, public housing\, or a place still being imagined. Join the East Side Freedom Library and our neighbors for a two-day Housing Summit about what home means\, who gets access to it\, and how we can build better housing futures together. \nLike the waters that meet in the Mississippi\, this summit brings together people of many cultures\, incomes\, and experiences. The housing issues we face are connected\, and so are we. Come share your story\, learn from others\, and help imagine what our neighborhoods could become. \nDay 1: Thursday\, November 20\, 6:00–9:00 pm. Dinner provided.\nThe evening begins with a shared dinner\, followed by a performance from zAmya Theater Project that asks us to rethink how we see social and public housing. A short community conversation after the show will start the dialogue we’ll continue the next day. \nDay 2: Friday\, November 21\, 12:00–5:00 pm. Lunch provided.\nWe’ll start with lunch\, then do a creative activity to imagine better futures for our neighborhoods. Next\, attendees will split into breakout groups to dig into the housing issues they care about most. We’ll close by coming back together to share what each group discussed and reflect on the day. \nRegister Now \nThe summit is free and open to all. You’re welcome to attend one day or both\, and you can choose your days when you register. For questions\, contact the Housing Justice team at lucid@eastsidefreedomlibrary.org.

SUMMARY:History Help Day Sessions
DESCRIPTION:The East Side Freedom Library invites students to benefit from our rich resources and our experienced mentors!\nThe 2027 National History Day theme asks students to think about significant changes in history and the reactions to those changes. Are students interested in\nracial justice\, labor activism\, women’s rights\, immigrant history\, GLBTQ+ movements\, environmental activism\, and more? Send them to the East Side Freedom Library to find rich resources (books\, art\, music\, and more) for their research and experienced mentors eager to help them shape their project. We have worked effectively with local students for the past ten years. \nESFL’s collection of 38\,000 books highlight labor\, civil rights\, immigration\, Native American\, Latinx\, African-American\, women’s\, and social justice topics. Our team of experienced mentors are prepared to help students find resources for the specific topics of their choosing. The following list of topics is meant to be suggestive of projects students can undertake to explore innovations in areas of their interest\, and the consequent impact\, influence\, and changes these innovations had. \nESFL’s mentors can help with thesis development\, finding additional sources\, developing performance strategies\, and structuring an argument. We have contacts with professors and primary source collections\, and we are committed to helping students set up interviews. We are experienced in supporting projects which use documentary videos\, performance (both solo and group)\, story boards\, interactive websites\, and papers. \nScheduled History Day Help Sessions: Saturday mornings\, November 14\, 2026 – April 24\, 2027 10am–12. \n2027 ESFL NATIONAL HISTORY DAY Topic List \n2027 NATIONAL HISTORY DAY Flyer \nWe encourage students to make an appointment by emailing peter@eastsidefreedomlibrary.org\, and that they be prepared to follow our safety protocols\, including wearing a mask if asked (as we are unsure what our precautions will be as we get deeper into the fall). After their initial mentoring consultation\, they will be welcome to come at other times to use our resources\, and our mentors will be available for one-on-one conversations\, in person or remotely. If you would like to speak with us\, feel free to call us at 651-230-3294. We look forward to working with you! \n  \n
