Both books were awarded the Minnesota Book Award for Poetry. \nDr. James Alexander Robinson is a native son of Saint Paul\, a railroad hub. James Robinson comes from a family of railroad workers. His research specialty is the historical study of Black railroad dining car cooks and waiters\, their unions\, communities\, and families\, and on Black railroad workers in general (Pullman Porters\, Red Caps). Additionally\, James has written on the history of Saint Paul’s Pilgrim Baptist Church. Dr. Robinson is currently the assistant professor of Black Studies within the Ethnic\, Gender\, Historical\, and Philosophical Studies Department at Metropolitan State University. He earned the Interdisciplinary Studies PhD in Black Studies from the University of Iowa\, where Dr. Robinson also earned a Master of Arts in History. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from Macalester College. Professor Robinson teaches courses on “Forms of Black Studies\,” “Black Thought\,” “Black Life in Wealth and Poverty\,” “Black Intellectual History\,” “Black Culture History\,” “Black Life and Culture\,” and “African Americans in Minnesota.”

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 16\, 2026 | 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM | East Side Freedom Library\nIn partnership with Trilingua Cinema \n\n\nHolding Ground: The Rebirth of Dudley Street\nAs part of our “Reel Stories: Housing Justice in Film” series with Trilingua Cinema\, we will be holding a screening and discussion around a documentary about community organizing in one Boston neighborhood that had had enough of being used as a dumping ground. \nFor years\, the Roxbury neighborhood in Boston was used as a dumping ground for the rest of the city’s trash. People complained that you could smell Roxbury before you got there. The city made a task force to address the issues but (un)surprisingly\, no residents of the neighborhood were on it. In 1985\, residents came together to let the city know that they were fed up. Through persistent efforts\, they were given unprecedented control over the neighborhood and revitalization efforts. The complex gained an infamous reputation and became a cautionary tale around public housing\, but like many things\, the true story is more complicated. \nThe term\, “Public Housing\,” conjures many different images for people. Many people associate public housing with rundown properties that are cold and uninviting. This was the reputation the Pruitt-Igoe property is St Louis. However\, when examined more closely the story is far more complicated. We are continuing that work by coalition building and creating events that help us rethink common narratives around housing \nWhat are Third Thursdays?\nAs part of our Housing Justice Program\, we are holding events on Third Thursdays to talk about housing in a variety of ways\, like documentary screenings and talks with local activists! We hope to spark invigorating discussion and build quality connections amongst our community. \nWhy you should come!\nCome through to learn and meet others who care about housing! We want people to carry lessons from these events beyond our four walls and make connections.
