A Story of Reconciliation

Tuesday, July 24, 2018, 7 to 8:30pm

29:11 consists of youth from the Cape Flats region of Cape Town, South Africa. These townships were originally created by the apartheid government which ruled until 1994. Under apartheid, people were classified as “African,” “Indian,” or “Coloured,” and they were forced to live in segregated communities which were notoriously under resourced and denied political representation. After generations of struggle, the apartheid regime dissolved in 1994 and Nelson Mandela became the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

But conditions have remained difficult in the historic townships. Unemployment, crowded classrooms, poverty, poor housing, and high crime rates have continued to undermine the quality of life for many South Africans. 29:11 is an outstanding musical group of young adults who have emerged out of these challenges to sing, discuss, and advocate for hope and a better life.

Please join them as they share their “story of reconciliation” with us.
