The East Side Freedom Library invites you to:

Theater of the Oppressed

Friday, April 20th, 6:30-9pm and Saturday, April 21st, 10am-3pm

Want to work toward social justice?

In this introductory workshop series, we’ll explore the tactics of Theatre of the Oppressed, including Image Theatre and Forum Theatre. Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) allows participants to physicalize, analyze, and explore concrete problems and systems of oppression as well as find ways to work to overcome them. TO, as its originator Augusto Boal often said, is rehearsal for revolution!*

The stories we explore will be ones you bring with you, and the “solutions” we explore collectively will be ones you propose. We’ll work toward social justice together, and the last day of the workshop series will host a “showcase” of the work we’ve been doing together so that you can invite your friends and community members and ask them to rehearse for revolution as well!

Theatre of the Oppressed is a method of popular education and performance making that offers theatre as a tool for liberation. TO proposes that theatre is a means of understanding the world and, most importantly, how we can transform the world. In TO, everyone can be an agent of change, an actor in their own life. TO is a concrete embodiment of the arts as instruments for social and political change.

Facilitators: Victor Cole and Charles Adams

*Augusto Boal is often referred to as the creator of TO, but it’s important to remember that the work was most often done in collaboration with oppressed peoples.

Workshop Cost:

$35-$140 (individual workshops)

$70-$280 (for the entire workshop series)

Sliding scale available–no one turned away!!
