More Than a Score (Book Club)

January 10, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm CST

Event Navigation

January’s book is “More Than a Score”: Across the country, students are walking out of classes, parents are opting their kids out of standardized tests, and teachers are refusing to administer these detrimental exams. This book is a collection of essays, poems, speeches, and interviews from frontline fighters, defying the corporate education reformers who are pushing these high-stakes standardized tests. Edited by Jesse Hagopian.

Our monthly book club is co-sponsored by the Saint Paul Federation of Teachers and the East Side Freedom Library, and focuses on issues such as education, race, economics, and the intersection of all three.  It is free and open to the community.

You can buy the book (and find local stores that stock it) here.

We will be primarily discussing the following four chapters of the book:

Chapter 3: “Well, How Did I Get Here?”: The Many Paths to “No” by Barbara Madeloni

Chapter 4: The Rise of the Badass Teachers Association by Mark Naison

Chapter 5: Standardized Testing and Students of Color by Brian Jones

Chapter 7: Defending Young Children by Nancy Carlsson-Paige
