Juneteenth Celebration: The Past, Present, and Future of Freedom Schools

juneteenth-2colorCommemorating the celebration of Juneteenth with a set of presentations which engage “The Past, Present, and Future of Freedom Schools.”

Speakers will include:

–  Peter Rachleff on the organization of schools by African American activists and teachers, included freed slaves, in the early years of Reconstruction

–  Jeff Kolnick, Professor of History at Southwest Minnesota State University and a founding member of the Fannie Lou Hamer Institute in Jackson, Mississippi, on the role of Freedom Schools in the 1960s South

–  A network of local activists of color who are working in Freedom Schools formats to engage Saint Paul students of color in summer programs which see knowledge as power.
