Event Navigation

As part of the SANKOFA FILM FESTIVAL, Minnesota’s first African film festival featuring films from the African diaspora, the East Side Freedom Library will feature the documentary “Wilmington on Fire”, as well as a collection of short films dealing with issues of freedom.

“Wilmington on Fire” (2015), directed by Chris Everett, chronicles the bloody attack on the African-American community by a heavily armed white mob with the support of the North Carolina Democratic Party on November 10, 1898 in the city of Wilmington, North Carolina.

In addition, ESFL will screen the short films “The Movement” (2015), directed by Shawn Antoine II, a documentary about the Black Lives Matter Movement; “Power” (2015), directed by Jared Aja, a visual tribute to civil rights fighters through the lens of Southern Hip-Hop; and “Two Cities” (2016), directed by Darius Clark Monroe, a personal reflection on being displaced from New Orleans.
