In Celebration of Black History Month The East Side Freedom Library Invites You To The First Film In Our Black History Month Series

For hundreds of years, African Americans have used the arts to develop their responses to the challenges they have faced. Rize, an award winning documentary film, traces the emergence in south central Los Angeles of Clowning, a kinetic, athletic form of competitive hip hop dance.

In the aftermath of the Rodney King case and the 1992 Uprising, young African Americans used the cultural expression to build and create community.

Join us not only to watch this dynamic film but also to engage in conversation with dancer/scholar/activist Alessandra Williams, a member of Ananya Dance Theater and Ph.D student in the World Arts and Cultures program at UCLA.
